Hawk Fire Aftermath: Red Cross Advises Caution for Returning Residents
Last updated: September 24, 2026
Residents displaced by the Hawk Fire are now beginning the process of returning to their homes. While the immediate threat of the fire may have passed, the Red Cross is issuing a critical reminder about the importance of exercising caution upon re-entry. This period, often filled with relief, also presents potential hazards that require careful attention. Safety is paramount as individuals assess their properties. The Red Cross's guidance focuses on a thorough inspection of the home's exterior and interior before resuming normal activities. This includes looking for any signs of structural damage that may have been exacerbated by the fire or the firefighting efforts. Particular attention should be paid to utility systems. Gas lines, electrical wiring, and water pipes can all be compromised by fire and smoke. It's advisable to have these checked by qualified professionals to ensure they are safe and functioning correctly. Any lingering smoke or soot can also pose respiratory risks. Beyond the immediate structure, the surrounding environment needs consideration. Residents should be aware of any potential hazards in their yards or neighborhoods, such as downed power lines or unstable debris. The Red Cross urges patience and a systematic approach to returning, prioritizing personal safety above all else. This week, as you begin to settle back in, take the time to systematically check these critical areas. Don't rush the process; a slow and careful assessment will prevent potential accidents or further damage. If you notice any issues with your garage door, such as damage from smoke, heat, or debris, or if it's not operating smoothly after the event, it's wise to have it inspected.
